He Became Sin
God made him who had no sin to be sin
for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
(2 Corinthians 5:21)
Meditation
Ever since Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit, humans
have become a sinful race. You, me, and every person who has walked this earth is
a sinner in need of a savior. Every bad thing you do is a wrong committed is
against God. When a sin is committed, any sin from an impure thought, to the little
white lie, to 1st degree murder, and everything in between, is a
debt owed to God that must be paid, like it or not.
When a person commits a crime here on earth, we, as a
society, demand justice, which usually involves some form of punishment. The
penalty can range from paying a fine, going to prison or even a death sentence, in extreme cases, as atonement for the crime. God’s justice requires atonement
also. The four thousand years from the Fall in the Garden to the crucifixion,
human sin required a blood sacrifice to atone for their sins.
Jesus is the only man who ever lived to have never
committed a single sin. He never had an impure thought, he never told a lie,
and he certainly never committed a murder. He lived and walked with us for
approximately thirty-three years and yet, he was blameless when he was hung on
the cross. When Jesus willingly sacrificed himself, the Father in heaven placed
all the sin that would ever be committed on him. Jesus paid that sin debt with
his own blood.
In Romans 6:23 we’re told that the wages of sin is
death. By death, it means eternal separation from God in hell. There is no
reprieve from hell. We don’t get a second chance or a “get out of hell free”
card. Our only hope of escaping that judgment is to repent and turn to Jesus
while we’re still here on earth. When we turn our lives over to Jesus, we are
considered by God to be as righteous as Jesus even though we are sinners. The
blood Jesus shed way back then cleanses us and punches our free ticket to
heaven.
Our past, present and future sins have been paid for.
All we have to do is repent of our sins, confess we believe Jesus is the Son of
God; that he died on the cross, was raised from the dead. There is nothing else
we can to do to be forgiven. There are no good deeds we can do that make us
righteous. Only Jesus can show us the path to righteousness, only he can be our
example.
Prayer Time
Heavenly Father, we are humbled by your majesty. Your love is boundless, and we struggle to understand why you even care about us. But it’s evident in everything you’ve done and continue to do to provide for us. We thank you, Lord, for our daily bread, for the roof over our heads. Mostly, Father, we thank you for providing for our salvation, which you take such pleasure in. You placed every sin we and every other person on the planet would ever do, on the shoulders of Jesus as he hung on the cross. Not because Jesus deserved it but because he did not. Not because he was guilty of any sin but because he had not sinned, ever! He was the spotless lamb, who’s sacrificial blood has washed us clean and made us righteous before you. So, Lord God, we humble ourselves and honor and worship you on bended knee! Never let us forget or trivialize the price you paid for our salvation. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen!
