Are You Serving God or Money
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the
one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and money.”
(Matthew 6:24)
Meditation
Even
though there are many religions in the world, there are only two gods you can
serve. There’s either the only true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
or we serve ourselves. The latter is actually trying to make Satan an equal
with Jesus. The God of heaven is the God of the universe and everything in it. He
is called Yahweh, among other names. God has three distinct personalities,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Satan is nothing but a fallen angel who was
kicked out of heaven when pride entered his heart. He is very powerful when
compared to us, but not as powerful as God, not even close. Satan will do
anything he can to keep you from loving and serving Yahweh. His simplest and
most effective strategy is to lure us away is by fostering our own selfishness.
Satan
uses the glowing appeal of gold to distract us from serving the one true God. The
love and pursuit of money is the greatest and most dangerous temptation there
is to our immortal souls, all brought on by our selfishness. The worldly
attraction of accumulating riches touches us all at times. Benjamin Franklin
once said, “There is nothing in [money’s] nature to produce happiness. The more
a man has, the more he wants.” When we have no money, we desperately want it.
When we have much, we only want more. In both instances money is the god we serve.
We sacrifice our time, energy, and every thought to possessing it.
God attracts his children to him with love,
compassion, forgiveness, mercy, and grace. As believers in Jesus Christ, money
becomes nothing more than a tool we use to show our love for him. Whatever
wealth God has provided us; we share with those less fortunate. Whether we have
a great deal of money or very little, we don’t give it any more importance in
our lives than that of any other tool. If we are the real children of God, he
alone will be served, and money is nothing more than a way we show our love for
him. By serving the true God, he blesses us. He may or may not bless us in a
financial way, but his blessing will be real, and our hearts will know.
Prayer Time
Lord God in heaven, you hold sway over all creation. You could choose to destroy it all and start over, and you would be justified to do that. We bow to you as the master of our souls and we’ve determined to follow Jesus throughout whatever time you give us on this earth. This world we live in if full of all kinds of false gods we choose to worship over you. All of them have been designed by Satan to distract us from you. Father help us to remember who our real master is. Teach us to keep our focus on Jesus and not on what Satan or our own selfish desires try to focus on. Thank you for not letting us listen to the world, that tells us we can work excessively hard to fulfill our earthly wants and still serve you. Help us to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit as he tries to redirect back to the righteous path. We only wish to serve you, Lord, no matter what the devil offers. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
