There Will Be Scoffers
Meditation
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days, scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
(2 Peter 3:3-4)
It’s
very difficult for most people, who are corporeal beings with relatively short
lifespans, to see the big prophetic picture. They can only see what’s happening
to them right at that moment in time. I used to think in much the same way.
People are born, and when they reach adulthood, they get married and have
children. Then, after they’ve lived an average of 75 years or so, they die. It looks
to everyone like nothing has changed since the beginning of time and therefore,
never ever will. They are basically, walking through life with blinders on. God’s
Word is the lens they should be looking through because God sees all. From the
beginning to the end.
They
view the predictions of the second coming of Christ as some kind of pipe dream
or escapism. They wouldn’t believe in the return of Jesus if he were suddenly
standing right in front of them. They prefer instead to see this world as
eternal, never changing. They like their lives and don’t want anyone or
anything to get in the way of their good time. They are confident the men and
women of science and technology will solve all the problems the world is facing
today. Never mind that much of the worlds woes are linked to what science and
technology have given us in the past. Yes, we in the West, live comfortable
lives, but that could all disappear in a heartbeat if a rogue nation were to
start a nuclear war.
The atheist make fun of and taunt believers. They persecute
us, and do everything they can to make us look foolish. The end of the world,
as we know it, has been prophesied by various scriptures for almost four
thousand years. Because the scoffers are only able to see time through the window
of their own lifespans, they can’t imagine a God who brings about his will for
this world over thousands of years. Because the end hasn’t come yet, they think
it never will come. God’s timing is not our timing and he will accomplish his
will for this world in his own time. It is up to us to lovingly remind the
scoffers they are ignorant of the truth of scripture in general and Last Day’s
prophecies, in particular.
