New Heavens and New Earth

Meditation

But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
(2 Peter 3:13)

The promise of new heavens and a new earth is both awesome and frightening at the same time. I’m really tired of this world full of evil and violence, which are a part of everyday life. I want to live in a righteous world where sorrows, tears and pain are a thing of the past. However, as awful as this world might be, I pretty much know what to expect. There’s an old saying, “better the devil you know.” This new heavens and new earth are going to come after a period of terrible tribulation brought on by the wrath of God. During this period of time, over half the world’s population will be killed. That’s over 3.5 billion people in a period of 7 years. It’s frightening for me to contemplate what the people, who are alive during that period, will have to experience. I pray that no one I love will have to go through that.
I’m pretty sure we’re approaching that awful time with everything that’s occurring in our world. Terrorism used to be the most common word used in the media reporting of current events. But actual terrorists acts were always far off. We wring our hands and worry about our own safety when terrorist strike, but that only lasts for a week or two. Now the two ends of the political spectrum seem to be ready to go to war with each other. We know politicians are lying to us, but if the lie benefits our side, it’s okay. We have a hard time trusting anyone because we’ve been taken advantage of so often we’ve become jaded. As bad as all that is, some new and unknown future world might be a little scary to us. Mostly, we’re not sure how God is going to accomplish his plan.
That’s a good reason not to hold too tightly to the things of this world. The things we are attracted to today are nothing but a vapor and are not going to be around much longer. I have no idea what this new earth is going to look like. My imagination isn’t that good, but I trust in our God and how much he loves us. I know, no matter what this new earth looks like, it’s going to be glorious. Since we look forward to this new world we should make sure that the Lord doesn’t find us wallowing in sin unaware the end is here. Like I said, I hope I’m not around for this climactic ending. Therefore, we wait but even so, come quickly Lord Jesus!

Prayer Time

Lord of heaven and earth, we praise you for your even-handed justice on an unrepentant world. You could be justified in wiping this world of all human life, because of our continued wickedness that goes unabated. We thank you for all the signs and prophetic words given in scripture of what’s coming in the near future. Give us the eyes to see these signs and the mind to discern what they mean for us. These days, we’re seeing one natural disaster after another hitting all around the world. We are plagued with earthquakes, hurricanes and typhoons, floods, landslides, wildfires, volcanoes, and the list goes on. The prophetic clock is ticking, and we have to be sharing the gospel of truth to the whole unbelieving world. Lord we know that when the end of this age is finally here, this world we live on will be totally remade into a new world that will literally be paradise. We know this is true because you have said you will make your home here with us. What a glorious day that will be. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
