Behold, He Is Coming
Behold, he is coming with
the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all
tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
(Revelation
1:7)
How can, “those who pierced him,” see him return when
they’ve been dead almost 2,000 years? It could be pointing to the Jewish people
who still reject their Messiah. More likely thought, it’s referring to all of us, since
he was pierced for all our transgressions. Many modern-day
interpretations of this verse think, “every eye will see him,” refers to the
technology of satellites and television. However, even in our modern world,
many people do not have access to televisions. I’m not saying his coming won’t
visible on television. I think God has a trick up his sleeve that is
supernatural rather than technological.
All the people “will mourn” because they will
understand, once and for all, that Jesus went to the cross to pay for their
sins. They will feel great regret deep in their hearts for not accepting the
free gift of salvation. They will finally see how dark and dead their stony
hearts have been. They will know all the secular explanations for our existence,
that leave out an all-powerful God, were nothing but lies. They will realize,
no matter how much money they have, they can’t buy their way out of this. They
mourn because they know Jesus is coming to put an end to this world. The world they loved
and trusted.
We are all so wrapped up in trying to find natural
explanations for what’s described in these chapters, we forget we serve a
supernatural God. Yes, it’s absolutely possible he will use the technology of
the day to serve his purpose. Instead of trying to explain how it’s going to
happen, let's turn our hearts to what is going to happen. One thing is for sure, if
we don’t know Jesus when this happens, we’re going to wish we did. I don’t think it
will be too late to come to Jesus, unless you die before you turn your regret
into repentance.
If you are cleansed by the blood of Christ, you are
righteous in the Father’s eyes and do not have anything to fear from this
verse. Only those who are still in rebellion to their God and king will be in anguish
on this Great Day of the Lord. Are you in right standing with God? Are you
eagerly awaiting Christ or are you clinging too tightly to the gods of this
world like money, power, and possessions? There is still time to turn things
around. Give your ego the pink slip; put your carnal desires behind you, and
turn your life over to Jesus.
Lord God you hold the plan for our ultimate happiness in your heart, hidden for a future date. Words simply fail us when we try to describe the ecstasy that will fill our hearts when we see you. We hope you will not tarry a single moment longer than is necessary in bringing about that great and glorious day. It was our sins that Jesus went to the cross to die for, but because we’ve received your forgiveness, we will not be weeping in anguish when he returns. We know that he comes to cleanse the wickedness from all creation. We long to see an end to the violence and hatred that exists in this fallen world. Give us the words and actions that will break through the stony, cold hearts of the unsaved. Don’t let us prejudge who will listen and come to repentance and those who will reject you and continue in their rebellion. Help us to show them the same love you show us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
