Receive the Word With Meekness
Therefore, put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness
and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
(James
1:21)
Practically
every day, if I look around enough, I can find something that God detests.
Television offers up all kinds of immoral programming, even the ones that are
targeted at children. Added to that, there’s the internet where the debauchery
is literally endless. What he hates most is any wickedness in my own heart. As
a male, who is visually stimulated quite easily, I have to guard myself from those
kinds of television programs and websites.
I
consider myself to be a strong believer, but I am tempted by things in this sinful world all
the time. I have made the decision not to follow those carnal impulses. I am
not able to resist because I’m such a good person or because I have such a
strong willpower. It’s only by the strength I get from Jesus Christ through constant
prayer. I have accepted the awesome gift of salvation and immersed myself in the
waters of baptism. With that came the Holy Spirit to guide me through life and
help me resist. That was followed by the strong desire to dive into God’s
Word.
We
must be ever vigilant, constantly on guard against this spirit of wickedness.
The only way to fight off this evil world is on our knees in prayer, which is
our greatest weapon. We must always look to Jesus and meekly seek daily counsel
in his inspired Word. What does it mean to receive with meekness? It means we
consume the Word of God like food for our souls with a modest heart. With a
steady dose of scripture to bolster and protect us. We build a wall of
righteousness around our hearts that holds off even the most attractive
enticements Satan has to offer.
Maybe you are not saved yet. Maybe you are consumed in
a lifestyle of sex outside of marriage, or the wickedness that can be found on
the internet. You must understand, your eternal soul is in jeopardy. If you
disregard the warning to leave the filth offered by this world behind you and
turn to Jesus, you face eternal damnation. He is the only one whose hand is reaching out to rescue you. He
will pull you up out of the wickedness you are living in. No matter how lost
you are, no matter what you’ve done, he will wash you clean. Remember, there is
nothing in this world worth going to hell over.
Dear Lord, you brought the cleansing gift of salvation into our midst when Jesus walked among us. His blood was spilled as part of your divine plan of redemption for the fallen race of mankind. When he comes into our hearts, he finds us broken, filthy, and wicked. We all need the shed blood of Christ to pay the price for our wickedness and rebellion. Now that we have been washed and cleansed in baptism, help us to be able to discern the mystery of your power and love. Help us to put all of our past iniquities behind us and never desire to return to them again. We ask that you continue to be patient with us as we grow in our walk with you. Lord, we come to you, on our knees in humble adoration to learn from your inspired Word your plan for our lives. We seek the help of the Holy Spirit to strengthen our resolve to live in righteousness. We want to be like Jesus, please give us a heart like his for the lost. It’s in his precious name, we pray. Amen!
