He Made the Heavens and the Earth

Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
(Jeremiah 32:17)

We are the result of, what is to him, a simple thought of the Almighty. He conceived of us in his all-powerful mind and there is nothing simple about anything in creation. He spoke and billions of stars, probably just about as many planets and everything else out there that fills the universe, came into existence. He stretched out his hand and designed the DNA molecule that makes each of us individuals and not copies of each other. Everything, from the tiniest hydrogen atom to the largest star in the universe was created by God and it was good, including us. That means creation was perfect, no flaws.
So, what went wrong? Why do innocent babies die of horrible diseases? Why are some born with deformities that plague them all their lives? Why are we so violent and inhumane with each other in wars or in criminal acts? If God created us, and we were perfect then, why are we so imperfect now? The simple answer is free will. God did not create us to be human robots that could be programmed or forced to follow and worship him. He created us with the freedom to decide to love and serve him or not.
If God is all-powerful, why doesn’t he just put an end to everything that’s evil? If he did that, there wouldn’t be very many of us left. There isn’t one person on this planet who could stand up to that scrutiny. The human race fell from grace in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. It sounds like an innocuous crime, but it was the ultimate rebellion. That rebellion continues in us to this day and God will bring it all to an end in his timing. He is withholding his wrath to give as many as will, come to him.
If you haven’t yet come to Christ, he’s waiting for you! Please let that thought sink in for a moment. The all-powerful being with so much power he could create the universe and everything in it, is waiting for you to turn to him. He already loves you, he’s loved you since before you were even conceived. He is patiently waiting for you to love him. Please give your heart to him today. It’s not too late yet, but time is running out. Don’t wait another minute.

Father God, how do we comprehend you? How do we reconcile a God so powerful, he can wave the universe into existence, with a God who wants a personal relationship with each of us? How do we make those two things compute? You created all things including us, and it was all perfect. There were no mistakes, including us. You created us in your image with a free will to either choose to love and obey you, or to rebel and follow our own path. We failed that test and chose rebellion. From that time, you were setting in motion the plan for man’s redemption through Jesus Christ. Help us, Lord, when we don’t understand why there is so much suffering in this world. How do we explain suffering to an unbeliever when we don’t understand it ourselves? Remind us we are a sinful people, living in a fallen world, and disease and violence are the result. But you are a God of restoration and renewal. Jesus is coming again to carry out your will bringing an end to sin and suffering. In his name, we pray. Amen!
