Where is Your Citizenship?

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
(Philippians 3:20)

Not long after I decided to follow Jesus I began to realize I didn’t really fit into my old life anymore. The things I used to think were great fun had lost their appeal. The sci-fi television programs and movies I used to always want to watch, seemed inappropriate. Probably because they were literally my religion before I got saved. My friends didn’t understand why I wasn’t coming around for most of the old activities. I guess I was in the process of figuring out where my citizenship was, heaven or hell.
Now I understand, as a follower of Jesus Christ, I am a citizen of heaven, I’m just a temporary visitor, to this world. My passage home to heaven has been paid for and guaranteed by my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I live my life as a resident alien and look forward to the day I move on to my permanent and eternal residence. Jesus will rescue me and the rest of his followers from this wicked world. I wait for that day with patience and great anticipation.
We will live on this world for eighty or ninety years, if we’re healthy. That’s like a tiny drop in the ocean of time. Whether we are saved or not, eternity is the ocean we’re going to be living in for time unending. There are only two citizenships for us in eternity, heaven or hell. If we are not saved, our citizenship will be in hell and that’s where we’ll be for eternity. Once we’re in hell, there is no reprieve. It’s our choice, we are the ones who pick which citizenship we want by whether we submit to Jesus or reject him.
Unlike here in the United States, where it takes ten years for a legal alien immigrant to become a citizen, repentance and baptism is all that’s required by Christ. If your passage is not already paid to heaven, give your life to Jesus. We only have a short amount of time while here to make the choice, but it has to be made here. It’s too late once this life is over. Turn your life over to Him today, don’t wait another minute. Then your citizenship will be in heaven also.

Lord God, you are the King of the universe! Your kingdom is the eternal and the only one we want to spend eternity in. We can only wonder at what we’ll find when we get there. Splendors beyond our human ability to describe. We eagerly await our deliverance to that coveted destination with captivated excitement. Our citizenship has been purchased and guaranteed by the precious blood of Christ. We are made your adopted sons and daughters when we turn our lives over to Jesus. Even though we desperately want to be with you, Lord, temper our desire and renew the purpose you put in our hearts to spread the gospel of Christ to everyone we meet. Lord, we pray for those who’s citizenship is currently in hell. Soften their hearts and make them receptive to the good news. Put the words in our mouths that will sway them to the truth. Give them ears to hear how much Jesus loves them and wants them to spend eternity with him. We thank you and love you always. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
