What is Truth?

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.”
(John 18:37-38)

Meditation

Truth is not a relative thing. There are no gray areas, only truth and falsehood. Many people think like Pilate, believing there is no such thing as absolute truth. You’ll hear all the time that what’s right and moral for one person may not be right and moral for another. Take sex outside of marriage for example. Before I was saved, I told myself I could sleep with anyone I wanted because I was simply making a choice. It didn’t occur to me that I might be hurting anyone. That wasn’t on my radar; I didn’t really care that much. If there were parts of my life, I wish I could forget or do over, it would be that phase of my life. I almost don’t even know the person I was.
Jesus came to tell us the truth because he is truth. We shouldn’t believe those who tell us that we are wrong or evil or haters because we believe in the truth of Jesus Christ. Every word of what is written in the scriptures is true and breathed out by God. Until I gave my life to Christ, I couldn’t understand the message of the cross. I believed the secular world’s teaching that God was a fabrication of weak minded people who needed an explanation of why we exist. However, with my salvation came clarity of thought. It was suddenly easy to distinguish the difference between right and wrong, truth and falsehood.
Pilate knew in his heart that it was wrong to crucify an innocent man. He did what he did because, in his mind, whether it was right or wrong was irrelevant. Whatever he had to do was truth to him. There is right and wrong in the world. There is good and evil in our world. God will not accept the excuse that you didn’t know it was wrong. Everyone has a conscience that nags at you when you do something wrong. I got so good at pushing my conscience so far back in my mind, I didn’t hear it anymore. One evening, however, I heard the Word of God preached and I was forever changed. The Word of God is our guide and if you submit to its teachings, you will have no difficulty in knowing what truth is.

Daily Prayer

Heavenly Father, you are the master and ruler of the universe. It would be fully within your right to turn your back on mankind and leave us to our own fate. Instead, you gave us a Savior to make a way back to righteousness. He wasn’t just a good man, as some unbelievers want to say. He wasn’t just a healer, even though he probably healed thousands in the three years of his ministry. He wasn’t just a teacher, even though he taught us about more things than anyone else ever has. He was then, and still is, the king. Jesus came to tell the world about you and your truth. He couldn’t have completed his task is he wasn’t the personification of truth. He came to us with this ministry of truth and we turned our backs on him and we still do it to this day. Even though Pilate new there was no fault in Jesus, his worldview had no real definition of what truth was. He was trapped by his inability to understand what truth is and went through with the crucifixion of Jesus. It’s in his precious name, we pray. Amen!
