He Will Reign Forever

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.
(Luke 1:32-33)

Meditation

He was born in a smelly stable for animals and laid in the same feeding trough they ate from. He was born of the humblest of beginnings, but he was still the King of kings. He was born a helpless babe, but he was also Immanuel, God with us. His mother was an average teenage girl, betrothed to an average carpenter of his day, but his real father was the Most High God! There was nothing about his birth that suggested greatness except, angels announcing his arrival to the lowly shepherds. Followed, eventually, by the visiting magi from the east. That’s not what usually happens after the birth of a normal baby, but Jesus was anything but normal.
He is the King of kings, but he has been virtually ignored through the centuries. His birth was prophesied for centuries before, but his coming was missed by the very people who should have been expecting him. He came to save us, but we killed him. He died and was buried but he was raised and lives again! He reigns at the right hand of the Father from on High, but he is coming back soon! His love for us has no limit, but the time left for us to submit to him is running out. If we should die before we give him the lordship of our lives, it will be too late for our souls. Very soon, possibly even today, he will come to dispense his Father’s wrath on an unbelieving and rebellious world. The time is now to give your life to him.
He is called the King of the Jews, but he will reign over the whole world one day. He will reign from Jerusalem, the eternal city and the nations will all pay homage to him there. The Father gave him the throne of David and it will have no end. His lineage is beyond reproach. His earthly bloodline contains names like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David. He is the rightful heir to the throne of David and he will reign there forever. The Father has decreed it and he always keeps his promises. The scriptures assure us we will be with Jesus, our King for eternity, so wherever he is, there we will be also. He will rule here on earth for a millennium and then, when the new heavens and new earth come, he will reign there.

Prayer Time

Our Father in heaven, you are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. You don’t change your mind with the changing winds of time. You don’t love us less on some days and more on others because of our sins. Your forgiveness is complete even though we fail you in some way every day. Thank you for giving us what we need to make it through each day. You promised, from the foundation of time, to give a savior. What a good and perfect gift that was. Thank you for the birth of Jesus, who later paid the price for our sins on the cross. He willingly left his place with you in heaven and became a man to redeem us from this fallen world. You have set him on the throne of David and he will reign there forever. Thank you, Father, for loving us so much that you thought it worth the pain and disgrace to endure the cross. Give us your heart, especially at this time of year, for the lost people in our lives. Help us to show them how much we love them and find the words to bring them into a right relationship with you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
