What Is God's Will

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!
(Psalm 143:10)

When I was a new Christian, I thought God’s will was like a “man on the mountain” kind of wisdom someone would share with me someday. I’d say, “I don’t know what God’s will is.” However, I never did much to find out what it was. In my study of the Bible, I learned his will is not some kind of secret only a select few can know. I don’t have to go to divinity school to learn his will. I know God’s will, will never contradict God’s Word. He does not will me to hatred or judgment of others who don’t believe. His will for me is a commitment to dedicate myself to his service.
He is God and I am not! That was a tough one for me. I didn’t like being told what to do, or how I was supposed to live. Before I turned my life over to Christ, my own will reigned supreme in my life. I did things that would please me or my family. It’s been a journey to submit my will to God’s and I’m still on that journey. Being someone who likes to be in control, it has been a bumpy road at times. When I go off on my own, I can tell by that nagging feeling I get from the Holy Spirit. If I follow his will for my life, I always feel better about myself and whatever I’m doing.
Maybe you are like I was. God doesn’t teach us by osmosis. His will doesn’t seep into our brains over time without us doing anything. His will isn’t for us to simply try to be a good person, although, he does want that. If you rely on the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to guide you, you will know his will and be open to his leading. There is nothing more to it than that. I have no excuse to say I don’t know anymore. We must not put up boundaries and limitations on his leading. Then, when life’s trials suddenly come, it doesn’t feel like you’re falling off a cliff. If you remain in his will, you can calmly depend on God to see you through. Hallelujah!

Hallelujah to our God! You are the kind master we serve with all our hearts. Through our study of your Word we discover what your will is for us. When we are indolent and barely try to find out what you have willed for us, let your Spirit keep spurring us on to gain that knowledge. Don’t let us hide behind the lie that we can’t know what your will is. Joshua 1:8 teaches us to always study the Bible and take instruction from it. We are selfish beings, and we always find ourselves in a mess when we pursue after our earthly desires, instead of following Jesus. Father forgive us when we foolishly put what we want ahead of your will for our lives. Help us to listen to the whispers of the Holy Spirit who abides in us. He will keep us on the righteous path. He will never lead us astray, but always have the bright light of your will in our forward gaze. We will see that if we keep our focus on Jesus and follow him with all our hearts. We pray this in his name. Amen!
