Let His Light Shine Through You
Again, Jesus spoke to them,
saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in
darkness but will have the light of life.”
(John 8:12)
As I went through
most of my life without Jesus, I was like a blind person trying to walk through
an unfamiliar room, bumping into every piece of furniture. The difference is a
real blind person knows how to make it through without stubbing their toes.
Before coming to Jesus, I wandered through life bumping into one disappointment
after another, without purpose or direction. I needed Jesus to show me the
light of truth.
It isn’t a
darkness of sight, like turning off a lamp at night that can be turned back on.
This is a darkness of the mind and soul. It was deep into the furthest reaches
of who I was. Almost everything I thought about had something to do with sinful
desires and behaviors. I wouldn’t think about who I could help that day. I
would think about who I could get even with or who I could take advantage of.
My life without
Jesus was a train wreck. Before, I was blind to the consequences of the
darkness of my sin. It was an abstract concept to me. What was right for me may
not have been right for someone else, but I didn’t care about that. I was only
looking out for what I wanted. I always provided for my family, but it was my
wants that were most important to me.
Now that I have
turned my life over to Christ, I am filled with an overabundance of hope and an
indescribable joy. He provides the light that lifts the veil of my blindness,
so I’ll never have to walk in darkness again. Now, I live to serve others. I
find more fulfillment from helping someone else than I ever felt in my
selfishness before. Now, I am in Christ and I want his light to illuminate the
darkness through me.
(Matthew 18:15)
Heavenly Father, we are your sons and daughters because you have adopted us by the blood of Jesus. It must break your heart when your children become estranged from each other. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we should do everything in our power to maintain our relationships with one another. When we feel slighted by a fellow believer, it’s easy to shun our antagonist, just like we did before we were saved. God, you have set us apart from the unbelievers, so we shouldn’t act like them anymore. As your children, we should be like loving siblings and not a dysfunctional family. Give us the will, Lord, to confront those who have sinned against us. Don’t let us bury the offense in our hearts and have it fester into something bigger than it was to begin with. Instead, lead us to talk it out with the offender and try to make things right. If we succeed, we’ll be reconciled, and our part of the body of Christ is preserved. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
